The Software as an Educational Resource.

The Software as an Educational Resource

•       Computers are more than just the hardware.
•       The computer can hardly be useful without the program or system that tells what the computer machine should do.
•       This is also called the software.

There are two kinds of Software:

•    The systems software
•  The application software

Systems Software:

•       System software is designed to operate and control the computer hardware and to provide a platform for running application software.
  •  System software can be separated into two different categories, operating systems and utility software

Two kinds of Systems Software:

  •      Operating Systems
  •   Utility Software

Operating Systems:

Examples: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux

•It allows the parts of a computer to work together by performing tasks.
•It also provides a platform to run high-level system software and application software.

     Graphical User Interface:

•       A user interface allows users to interact with a computer, through icons and menus.
•       The graphical user interface (GUI) has been perhaps the most common user interface technology.

GUI Elements:

•       Structural elements
•       Interaction elements
•       Structural Elements

  1. Window

–      Container Window
–      Browser Window
–      Message Window, or Dialog Box

  1. Menus

–       Menus allow the user to execute commands by selecting from a list of choices.

Structural Elements:
  1. Icons
  2. Controls (or Widgets)
  3. Tabs
Interaction Elements:

  • Cursor – An indicator used to show the position on a computer monitor or other display device that will respond to input from a text input or pointing device.

    •
  • Pointer
  • Insertion point/ text cursor
  • Interaction Elements

  1. Selection:

–      A selection is a list of items on which user operations will take place. The user typically adds items to the list manually, although the computer may create a selection automatically.

  1. Adjustment handle:

–      A handle is an indicator of a starting point for a drag and drop operation.
–      Usually the pointer shape changes when placed on the handle, showing an icon that represents the supported drag operation.

  1. Command-line Interface:

-It is still a commonly used alternative

Utility Software:

•       Helps to analyze, configure, optimize and maintain the computer, such as:

–      Virus Protection
–
Backup
 software
–      Disk cleaners
–      System profilers
–      Screensavers  - were desired to prevent “screen burn”.

APPLICATION SOFTWARE

  Application Software:

•       Is a set of one or more programs designed to carry out operations for a specific application.
•       Application software cannot run on itself but is dependent on system software to execute.
Examples: MS Word, MS Excel, console game, library management system, billing system, etc.

Types of application software:

An application suite consists of multiple applications bundled together.

 • They usually have related functions, features and user interfaces, and may be able to interact with each other.  Business applications often come in suites, e.g. Microsoft Office, LibreOffice and iWork.

 Types of application software:

  1. Information worker software
  2. Content access software
  3. Entertainment software
  4. Enterprise infrastructure software
  5. Simulation software
  6. Media development software
  7. Product engineering software
  8. Educational software

    1. The primary purpose of which is teaching or self-learning.

Types of Educational Softwares:

        Courseware:

–       Courseware is a term that combines the words 'course' with 'software'.
–       Kits for teachers or trainers or as tutorials for students, usually packaged for use with a computer.

      Classroom aids:

–   Interactive Whiteboards

Assessment software:

–       Computer-based assessment
–       Paperless

Reference Software:

–       Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Wikis, CD-Rom.
